The Hair Project: 23 Hairs
The Hair Project: 23 Hairs
2010

Most humans lose 100 to 200 hairs per day during the normal process of exfoliation. I deliberately left hairs in specific places around New York City to assert my biological connection to that environment. Hair contains genetic material, which can be extracted and processed to determine an individual's identity. It is also made of molecules that will eventually become incorporated into the environment. By mapping out the locations and times of the hair placement, I have a record of genetic movement through the city. This, I feel, establishes a connection with human movement and migration on a global scale. This is a very narrow study of the movement of one individual.
